Eppendorf® Sustainability: Caring Together
In 1970, the founders of Eppendorf established a clear purpose: to improve human living conditions. Today, Eppendorf continues to work towards fulfilling that mission. Sustainability is an issue that poses many challenges, but also offers many opportunities. Eppendorf® products are becoming ever more sustainable, helping to ensure that research can be carried out around the world for generations to come. The Eppendorf® portfolio of labware consumables, liquid handling devices, freezers, centrifuges, and PCR cyclers includes products designed to help labs meet their sustainability targets, featuring for example:
- Consumables that are reusable or made from recycled material
- Equipment that is energy-efficient or uses sustainable technology
- Products whose sustainability features were scored using the ACT® Label from non-profit My Green Lab based on manufacturing processes, energy and water use, packaging, and end-of-life options

Eppendorf® BioBased Tubes and Tips
Improve Sustainability with Eppendorf® BioBased Tubes and Tips
One approach to improve the sustainability of lab plastics is to use renewable feedstocks in their production processes. Switching from primary fossil oil-sourced plastics to bio-based materials can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support a more circular economy. Eppendorf® BioBased consumables are made from bio-based plastics and offer identical performance in sample preparation, PCR, and cell culture applications.
- Eppendorf Tubes® BioBased (5, 15, 25, and 50 mL, PCR-clean and sterile)
- epT.I.P.S.® BioBased pipette tips (reloads, Dualfilter and Dualfilter SealMax, PCR-clean or Biopur)

Eppendorf® Energy Efficient Ultra Low Temperature (ULT) Freezer
Save Energy with Eppendorf® Lab Equipment
Energy consumption is often overlooked as a significant contributor to laboratories’ carbon footprints. Eppendorf manufactures energy-efficient products including:
- CryoCube® freezers redesigned to operate more efficiently
- Centrifuges with energy-saving features such as FastTemp for energy-efficient pre-cooling and automatic ECO shut-off after pre-defined time of non-usage
- Low power consumption PCR thermocyclers with standby and idle modes for more energy efficiency
Conserve Resources with ACT® Certified Eppendorf® Products
Eppendorf collaborates with My Green Lab®, an international NGO that has been validating and assessing laboratory products with the ACT® Environmental Impact Factor Label since 2017. The ACT® label for lab equipment and supplies provides transparent, third-party verified sustainability data focused on manufacturing processes, energy and water use, packaging, and end-of-life options. ACT® certified Eppendorf® products include pipette tips, tubes, ultra-low temperature freezers, centrifuges, PCR cyclers, and pipettes.
