General description

L-α-phosphatidylcholine constitutes 20% of the total phospholipids in chicken egg. At sn-1 and sn-2 positions it has palmitic acid (16:0) and oleic acid (18:1), respectively.

Application

Egg PC has been used:
  • in the preparation of unilamellar vesicles
  • in liposome preparation for proteoliposome reconstitution
  • as a liposome component in lipid transfer assay

Biochem/physiol Actions

Egg PC (phosphatidylcholine) in its saturated form favors inhibition of cholesterol absorption. It also serves as a substrate for microbes for the synthesis of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) thereby contributing to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. It is used in lipid preparation and liposomes for biophysical studies.
