General description
BMP (bis(monoacylglycerol)phosphate) is synthesized from phosphatidylglycerol (PG) in alveolar macrophages. BMP is a unique phospholipid having a glycerol phosphate ester at sn-1 position rather than sn-3 and has one acyl group attached to each of the glycerol moieties. The acyl groups of BMP is rich in polyunsaturated species.
Biochem/physiol Actions
BMP (bis(monoacylglycerol)phosphate) (BMP) is found in the retinal pigment epithelium of healthy human retina. BMP lipids regulates cholesterol level in endosomes. It is implicated in endosomal/lysosomal storage diseases like Niemann-Pick and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis diseases. BMP22/4PBPA is a small molecule inhibitor of autotaxin (ATX). 4PBPA has relatively a longer half-life and also reduces the lysophosphatidic acid concentration in plasma. BMP22 is implicated in reducing the bone erosion and systemic bone loss.
