General description
Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a key intermediate filament protein predominantly expressed in astrocytes, a type of glial cell in the central nervous system. GFAP plays a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity of astrocytes and supporting their functions, including the regulation of the extracellular environment, the provision of metabolic support to neurons, and the modulation of synaptic activity.
GFAP serves as an important biomarker for astrocyte activation and neuroinflammation. Elevated levels of GFAP in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood may indicate reactive astrogliosis, a condition often associated with brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer′s disease, and other neurodegenerative disorders. As increased GFAP levels often reflect the extent of neuroinflammatory responses and neuronal damage, GFAP is a critical target to monitor when developing strategies aimed at mitigating neuroinflammation and preserving neuronal health.
