General description

Integrin alpha-X (UniProt: Q9QXH4; also known as CD11 antigen-like family member C, Leukocyte adhesion glycoprotein p150,95 alpha chain, Leukocyte adhesion receptor p150,95, CD11c) is encoded by the Itgax gene (gene ID: 16411) in murine species. Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. CD11c is a single-pass type I membrane protein. It has an extracellular domain (aa 20-1116), a transmembrane domain (aa 1117-1137), and a cytoplasmic domain (aa 1138-1169). It is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-19), which is subsequently cleaved off in the mature form. Low levels of CD11c are expressed on human granulocytes and monocytes, and higher expression levels are observed on macrophages, dendritic cells and hairly cell leukemias. CD11c associates with beta-2 subunit in a non-covalent manner and then serves as a receptor for fibrinogen where it recognizes the sequence G-P-R. CD11c is shown to mediate cell-cell interaction during inflammatory responses and is important in monocyte adhesion and chemotaxis. Clone N418 is known to recognize an epitope on the p150 alpha chain. (Ref.: Metlay, JP et al. (1990). J. Exp. Med. 171(5); 1753-1771).
