Application
Chenodeoxycholic acid was used as standard in HPLC in the analysis of bile in natural gastric juice.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Chenodeoxycholic acid is a primary bile acid that causes desaturation of bile. When the composition of bile includes more than 70% of Chenodeoxycholic acid, the amount of cholesterol in bile reduces. This results in the dissolution of gall stones that result from the saturation of bile with cholesterol.
Preparation Note
A 2% solution of Chenodeoxycholic acid may be prepared in ethanol.
