Prof., Ph.D.

Axel Groß serves as Full Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at Ulm University. At the same time, he is PI at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm for Electrochemical Energy Storage. He studied physics at the University of Göttingen and the University of California at Santa Barbara. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics at the Technical University of Munich in 1993. After five years as a staff scientist at the Fritz-Haber-Institute of the Max-Planck-Socieity in Berlin, he became Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics/Surface Physics, TU Munich in 1998 and Full Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at Ulm University in 2004. In general, the research of Prof. Groß focuses on the elucidation of atomistic structures and processes at interfaces and in materials based on first-principles electronic structure calculations and dynamical simulations. Originally concentrating on surface science issues, the research interests of Prof Groß have in recent years been extended to topics in electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

Dr. Adam Raw is the Head of Materials Science R&D of Merck KGaA, operating as MilliporeSigma in North America leading its efforts in Bioprinting, Drug Delivery and Energy Storage Materials. Dr. Raw has been with Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany since 2012 in innovation centric roles including R&D, Product Management, Business Development and External Partnership Management. He received his Ph.D. in solid state chemistry from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois with a focus on transparent conductive oxides and energy storage materials. In his career Dr. Raw has helped steer numerous academic and industrial collaborations and consortia including those with DoE, ESPRC, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and UCLA.
