    A phase transfer catalyst (PTC) is a compound that promotes or accelerates a chemical reaction by allowing the migration of a specific chemical component from one phase into another phase in a heterogeneous system. A PTC is typically used when the starting materials for a reaction cannot be mixed into the same phase, which would prevent them from coming into contact each other to react. It can transport a reagent from a hydrophilic phase into the hydrophobic phase (and vice versa) so that the subsequent reaction can occur.
