β-丁内酯在乙氧基桥连双核铟催化剂存在下进行开环聚合，得到可生物降解的聚酯聚羟基丁酸酯。外消旋手性引发剂存在下的β-丁内酯聚合已有报道。它是有机合成的通用构件。
应用
β-丁内酯用于阴离子聚合制备（3-O-\ [olig-（3-羟基丁酸酯）] 荧光素，聚（3-羟基丁酸酯）的荧光素衍生物 。
