General description
Glucagon is a peptide hormone secreted by pancreatic alphacells that plays a vital role in maintaining glucose homeostasis. It acts as acounter-regulatory hormone to insulin by stimulating glycogenolysis andgluconeogenesis in the liver, thereby increasing blood glucose levels duringfasting or hypoglycemia.
