General description

Zinc chloride-catalyzed condensation of mesityl oxide with ethyl acetoacetate has been reported.

Application

Mesityl oxide has been used:
  • in the synthesis of 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1,3,3-trimethyldipyrrin, a crucial building block in the rational synthesis of chlorins and oxochlorins
  • as neutral marker in the preparation of imidazole-coated capillary column for electrophoresis
