General description

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a semiconducting material with closed packed stacking of double layers of silicon and carbon. It has excellent thermo-mechanical and electrical properties that make it useful in a variety of electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Application

SiC is majorly used as a base material for applications such as micro-structures, opto-electronic devices (light emitting diodes (LEDs), UV detectors), high temperature electronics (nuclear electronics), and high frequency devices.

Not Finding What You Are Looking For?

In some cases, a COA may not be available online. If your search was unable to find the COA you can request one.

  1. How does the storage temperature relate to shipping conditions?

The storage conditions that a Sigma-Aldrich catalog and label recommend for products are deliberately conservative. For many products, long-term storage at low temperatures will increase the time during which they are expected to remain in specification and therefore are labeled accordingly. Where short-term storage, shipping time frame, or exposure to conditions other than those recommended for long-term storage will not affect product quality, Sigma-Aldrich will ship at ambient temperature. The products sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than their recommended long-term storage are shipped on wet or dry ice. Ambient temperature shipping helps to control shipping costs for our customers. At any time, our customers can request wet- or dry-ice shipment, but the special handling is at customer expense if our product history indicates that the product is stable for regular shipment. See Shipping and Storage for more information.

  2. Which document(s) contains shelf-life or expiration date information for a given product?

If available for a given product, the recommended re-test date or the expiration date can be found on the Certificate of Analysis.

  3. How do I get lot-specific information or a Certificate of Analysis?

The lot specific COA document can be found by entering the lot number above under the "Documents" section.

  4. How do I find price and availability?

There are several ways to find pricing and availability for our products. Once you log onto our website, you will find the price and availability displayed on the product detail page. You can contact any of our Customer Sales and Service offices to receive a quote.  USA customers:  1-800-325-3010 or view local office numbers.

  5. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.

  6. Where can I find other Silicon- or Carbon-based materials?

Sigma-Aldrich offers a wide variety of Silicon-, Carbon-, and other metal-based ceramic materials.

  7. What solvents can I use to dissolve Silicon carbide, Product 357391?

Unfortunately, Sigma-Aldrich does not test the solubility of this material. Fundamentally, Silicon carbide (SiC) is insoluble in water. However, according to Lange's Handbook of Chemistry (16th ed.), beta-phase SiC is expected to be soluble in fused alkali oxides (e.g. KOH) at a ratio of 1 part per 100 parts. No specific solubility information is available for this alpha-phase product.

  8. What applications can Silicon carbide, Product 357391, be used for?

Silicon carbide (SiC) has found use in a variety of commercial applications. Historically, SiC has been used most frequently in the metallurical, abrasive, and refactory industries. More recently, this material has found increased use in high technology applications (e.g. electronics, aerospace, automotive, etc.).

  9. Is Silicon carbide, Product 357391, alpha- or beta-phase?

According to our supplier, this product is alpha-phase with a hexagonal crystal structure.

  10. The particle size of Silicon carbide, Product 357391, is listed in "mesh". What does this mean?

"Mesh" is a designation that refers to the particle size. It is related to the size screen -or mesh- through which the particles will pass. Product No. 357391 has a particle size of -400 mesh, which corresponds to a size of less than 38μm.
