General description

Dowtherm® A is a thermally stable organic heat transfer fluid composed of a eutectic mixture of highly stable compounds, biphenyl, and diphenyl oxide. Dowtherm® A is suitable for high-temperature heat transfer applications up to 400 °C. This fluid can be used in both liquid and vapor phase systems.

Application

Dowtherm® A can be used as a high boiling solvent in cyclization reactions. For example, it is used to synthesize:
  • 1-Hydroxy-5-methoxy-1,2-dihydrobenzo[f][2,7]naphthyridines from 2-chloro-3-formyl quinolines.
  • Isoindolinone derivatives via intramolecular Diels–Alder cycloaddition reactions of substituted pyridazines.
  • Phosphorylated azaheterocycles from 2-diethoxyphosphoryl-3-methoxyacrylate via intramolecular cyclizations under thermal conditions.
