General description

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a crucial protein involved in the development, maintenance, and survival of neurons in the brain. As a member of the neurotrophin family, BDNF promotes neuronal growth, differentiation, and synaptic plasticity, which are essential for learning and memory. It is primarily expressed in the brain, particularly in regions such as the hippocampus, cortex, and basal forebrain.

BDNF plays a significant role in neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Reduced levels of BDNF have been associated with conditions like Alzheimer′s disease, Parkinson′s disease, and depression. Low BDNF levels can lead to neuronal atrophy, impaired synaptic function, and increased vulnerability to neuroinflammation, exacerbating disease progression. Although BDNF was detectable in mouse, rat, non-human primate (rhesus macaque and cynomolgus monkey), and canine samples, the assay has not been verified for these species.
