General description
Fatty acid isolated from microscopic algae. Serves as a precursor for the prostaglandin-3 and thromboxane-3 families. It differs from arachidonic acid by the extra double bond between C17 and C18. Has a beneficial effect in cardiovascular diseases and inflammation. Also acts as an antihyperlipoproteinenic agent. Causes elevations of intracellular free Ca2+. Inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and reduces thromboxane A2 production and blood viscosity.
