General description

Cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein 4 (UniProt: D3ZKL3; also known as CPEB4) is encoded by the Cpeb4 (also known as rCG_33472) gene (Gene ID: 303010) in rat. The CPEB family of RNA-binding proteins regulate translation in various tissues in vertebrates. They shuttle between nucleocytoplasmic compartments with longer retention in the cytoplasm where they regulate target RNA translation. CPEB4 is an RNA-binding protein that promotes polyadenylation and translation of target RNAs and contributes to meiotic and mitotic progression. It acts as a survival factor exclusively for early postnatal granule cells in the olfactory bulb. CPEB4 is reported to interact with adaptor protein vinexin by binding to its first two SH3 domains and this interaction leads to vinexin localization in stress granules. It is shown that CPEB4 recruits vinexin to stress granules in response to adverse conditions, such as heat shock or arsenite-induced stress. CPEB4 is also shown to be essential for cell survival and becomes nuclear in response to focal ischemia in vivo and when cultured neurons are deprived of oxygen and glucose. (Ref.: Tseng, CS., et al.
