Gene Information

General description
Homeobox even-skipped homolog protein 1 (UniProt: P23683; also known as EVX-1) is encoded by Evx1 gene (Gene ID: 14028) in mouse. It belongs to a small family of vertebrate homeobox genes, comprised of EVX-1 and EVX-2, that have been shown to play an important role as transcriptional repressors during embryogenesis, and is induced by the presence of the FGF-4 growth factor. Members of the homeobox gene family are characterized by a conserved homeodomain that typically comprises around 60 amino acids. This domain allows it to bind DNA and regulate gene expression. EVX-1 is predominantly localized in the nucleus, and its nuclear localization is essential for its role in gene regulation during development. It may also play a role in the specification of neuronal cell types. Expression of the EVX-1 gene during embryogenesis defines the V0 and V1 classes of ventral interneurons in the ventral spinal cord, proposing that EVX-1 may also serve as a potential drug target for patients who suffer from loss of locomotive coordination due to spinal cord injury or stroke. Studies also indicate that both EVX-1 and EVX-2 are also involved in controlling body plan formation, as well as play a crucial role in gastrulation, appendage and tailbud development, and the specification of other neuronal cell types. Research shows that EVX1 is frequently hypermethylated in prostate cancer and predicts PSA recurrence. (Ref.: Pierani. A., et al. (1999). Cell. 97(7):903-915; Ko, H.W., et al. (2009).
