Application

m-Endo Total Coliform Broth is suitable for Total coliform detection in water samples. The media enables to differentiate between lactose fermenters from lactose non-fermenters.

Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater

General description

m-Endo Total Coliform Broth is a selective and differential medium used to estimate the coliform bacteria in water samples by membrane filtration technique. The medium enables differentiation between lactose fermenters and non-fermenters. The use of sodium sulfite and basic fuchsin instead of bile salts inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria. Lactose fermenting bacteria produce acetaldehyde that reacts with the sodium sulfite and fuchsin to form red colonies. The rapid fermentation of lactose by the organisms produces aldehydes, which leads to the development of a metallic sheen. Lactose non-fermenters form colorless colonies.
