General description

Cardiomyocytes are striated heart muscle cells that possess the unique ability to "self-contract" without central nervous system innervation. The inherent contractile activity of cardiomyocytes serves a critical function to pump blood throughout the circulatory system. Loss or dysfunction of cardiomyocytes due to hypertension (high blood pressure) or myocardial infarction (heart attacks), resulting in ineffective pumping of the heart, is a major cause of death and disabilities in the United States. Recent evidence suggests that embryonic and adult stem cells can be directed to become cardiomyocytes and will provide researchers with new strategies to restore heart function and develop new cardiovascular therapies in the future. Millipore′s Cardiomyocyte Characterization Kit contains a collection of validated antibodies that are specific to cardiomyocytes along with control IgG antibodies. Included in the kit are antibodies that are critical to the structure (actinin and desmin), contractile function (tropomyosin and troponin) and homeostatic control (ANP) of cardiac myocytes to a variety of signals that increase blood pressure. The kit enables researchers to characterize cardiomyocytes in culture using basic immunocytochemistry techniques.
The Cardiomyocyte Characterization Kit contains antibodies and controls for the immunocytochemical characterization of cardiomyocytes. The Cardiomyocyte Characterization Kit may be used on human, mouse and rat cells.
