General description

Lactitol is an analog of the disaccharide alcohol, lactulose. It is used as a laxative in the treatment of constipation. This unabsorbable lactose derivative has attracted interest as a sweetener for low-calorie foods.

Application

Lactitol may be used as an analytical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in food products by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) with an evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) and high-pH anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection.
