General description

Calcium ionophore III (Calimycin;CA) is a divalent cation ionophore. It has ability to transport Ca2+ ions across membranes along a concentration gradient.
Visit our Sensor Applications portal to learn more.

Application

CA was used in elucidating the mechanisms underlying the positive and inotropic and chronotropic ability of CA on isolated superfused guinea pig atria. It may also be used to stimulate and measure the erythrocyte Ca2+ dependent K+ channels as the K+ efflux.
Calcium ionophore III may be used in ionophore-based calcium selective conductometric microsensors for the detection of calcium ions in aqueous solutions. In NIH3T3 and rat1-fibroblast cell cultures, calcium ionophore III along with thapsigargin has been reported to increase the hepatic clock gene Per1 expression in the initial period of treatment.
Ionophore highly selective for Ca2+. Potentiates responses to NMDA but not quisqualate. In cell culture, stimulates nitric oxide production by calmodulin-dependent constitutive nitric oxide synthase.

Packaging

Bottomless glass bottle. Contents are inside inserted fused cone.
