Columbia Agar is a versatile medium designed for the cultivation of fastidious microorganisms. It is particularly suitable for clinical and food microbiology applications, where the growth of demanding bacterial species is required. This medium is often used in combination with enrichment broths for sub-cultivation purposes.

Columbia Agar is a high-grade complete medium suitable for the cultivation of fastidious microorganisms. It is also used as a base for the preparation of a variety of special media. The addition of blood permits the interpretation of hemolytic activities

Preparation Note

Dissolve 42 g in 1 litre distilled water. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.

Other Notes

Base agar in a medium for isolating Listeria spp. from heavily contaminated material; In a simple plate assay for detection of group A streptococcus proteinase.
