General description

Gelatin is a versatile, high-quality hydrocolloid derived from porcine skin. It is a heterogeneous mixture of water-soluble proteins of high average molecular masses, present in collagen. noted for its ultrahigh gel strength, which is an important characteristic for various microbiological procedures where a firm gel is required, such as in culture media or other applications where the gel′s structural integrity is crucial.

Application

Gelatin is commonly used as a gelling agent in the preparation of solid and semi-solid culture media. It also aids in the study of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms by providing a supportive structure for colony formation and development.

Other Notes

Gelatin is a heterogeneous mixture of water-soluble proteins of high average molecular masses, present in collagen. Proteins are extracted by boiling the relevant skin, tendons, ligaments, bones, etc. in water. Type A gelatin is derived from acid-cured tissue. Type B is derived from lime-cured tissue.
