General description

This test paper is used for the qualitative determination of arsenic (As) in solution, purged as arsine (AsH3). Depending on its concentration AsH3 forms a lemon-yellow to brown-black colored coordination compound with mercury compounds.
white → brown-black. The color reaction is faster, when the paper is first moistened before being used to test for AsH3 in air.

Application

  • Determination of As in grape must and wine
  • Determination of AsH3 in compartment air (paper to be moistened with acetic anhydride).

Liberated with zinc/hydrochloric acid, the test paper is exposed to AsH3 by holding it either over the test tube or over the end of a gas exhaust tube.
