General description
BSM is a specialized medium designed for the selective isolation, identification, and enumeration of bifidobacteria, such as Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium infantis. It is formulated to support the growth of bifidobacteria while inhibiting competing microorganisms, including Lactobacillus and Streptococcus strains. The medium contains peptone and meat extract as sources of carbon, nitrogen, vitamins, and minerals, along with yeast extract, which provides B-complex vitamins to stimulate bacterial growth. Dextrose serves as the carbohydrate source, while sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance. The medium includes reducing and buffering agents to optimize growth conditions and to detoxify metabolic by-products. Selective salts inhibit molds, Enterococci, and Gram-negative bacteria. Additionally, three antibiotics act as selective agents, effectively suppressing accompanying bacterial flora.
Application
BSM is widely used for quality control in the dairy industry, particularlyin the production of yogurt containing bifidobacteria. The medium’sselective properties make it ideal for industrial-level quality control,allowing easy and fast monitoring of bifidobacteria in dairy products. As bifidobacteriaare extensively used in probiotic formulations, BSM has been developed as astandard medium for quality control in products containing bifidobacteria.

Preparation Note
Dissolve 55.5 g BSM-Agar in 1 litre water. Sterilise by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 min. Cool to 45-50°C and aseptically add 116mg BSM supplement (Cat. No. 83055; freshly dissolved in 1 to 5 ml sterile water). Mix well and pour into sterile petri plates.
