General description

Thioglycolic acid is an organic colourless compound with thiol and carboxylic acid as functional group. It is mainly used to make depilatories. It is considered to be corrosive to metals and tissues.

Application

Mercaptoacetic acid has been used as a stabilizer for preparation of silver colloids, in a UV-vis spectroscopy study to establish stable and highly surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active silver colloids.

Other Notes

Reagent for the extraction and spectrophotometric determination of various transition metals, e.g. Pd; W; Mo; Ti
