General description

XLD Agar (Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate Agar) is a selective differentialmedium formulated for the isolation and differentiation of enteric pathogens,particularly Salmonella and Shigella species, from clinical,environmental, and food samples. The medium contains xylose as a fermentablecarbohydrate, lysine for decarboxylation reactions, and deoxycholate as aselective agent to inhibit Gram-positive and some non-enteric bacteria. Indicatorsin the medium detect acid production and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) generation,allowing clear differentiation based on colony color and morphology.

Application

XLD Agar is widely used in clinical microbiology and food safety testing toselectively isolate and identify Salmonella and Shigella speciesfrom mixed bacterial populations. It enables differentiation of these pathogensfrom other enteric bacteria by their distinctive colony appearances, helping inrapid diagnosis and epidemiological studies.

Preparation Note

Dissolve 56.7 g in 1 litre distilled water by heating slightly. Do NOT autoclave.
