General description

YGC Agar is a selective dehydrated culture medium designed for theenumeration and isolation of yeasts and molds, particularly in dairy products. Theformulation contains yeast extract as a source of vitamins, nitrogen, andgrowth factors; D (+)-glucose as a fermentable carbohydrate; agar as thesolidifying agent; and chloramphenicol, which suppresses accompanying bacterialflora while permitting the growth of yeasts and molds. A key practicaladvantage is that this chloramphenicol-containing medium is fully autoclavablewithout loss of selectivity.

Application

YGC Agar is used as a selective agar for the enumeration and isolation of yeasts and molds in milk and dairy products, following international dairy and food microbiology standards. It is suitable for determining fungal colony counts where bacterial overgrowth needs to be minimized, such as in quality control testing of milk, cheese, yogurt, and related matrices. The medium supports robust growth of characteristic fungal species (e.g., Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) while inhibiting typical bacterial contaminants such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, enabling accurate assessment of yeast and mold contamination in food and beverage testing laboratories.

Preparation Note

Dissolve 40 g in 1 litre distilled water. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.
