General description
DIMBOA is a powerful antibiotic present in maize and wheat. It was first identified in maize in 1962 as a saccharin-like ″sweet substance in corn″. DIMBOA is stored as an inactive precursor, DIMBOA-glucoside, which is activated by glucosidases in response to insect feeding. In maize, DIMBOA functions as natural defense against damaging insect pests and pathogens, including fungi and bacteria. DIMBOA level varies among individual plants, higher concentrations are typically found in young seedlings and lower concentrations in adult maize plants.

2,4-Dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA) and DIMBOA-glucoside (DIMBOA-Glc) are anti-insect benzoxazinoids in maize, yet very little information is known about how they are regulated. Reverse genetics, kinase activity analysis, phytohormone and DIMBOA/DIMBOA-Glc quantification, bioassays and transcriptome analysis were employed to study the function

2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA), the main benzoxazinoid found in corn, elicits variable larval responses from different pest moths. For the widespread and highly polyphagous Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), the fall-armyworm (FAW), DIMBOA acts as a feeding stimulant and improves larval growth at
