General description

Laminaribiose, also known as 2-O-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-D-mannobiose, is a non-digestible disaccharide composed of two β-(1→3) glucose units connected by an alpha-1,2-glycosidic bond. It is naturally found as a component of laminarin, a molecule present in brown algae. Laminaribiose is significant in microbiome research due to its prebiotic properties, which aid in the synthesis of complex carbohydrates such as cellulose and hemicellulose. Recent studies indicate that laminaribiose may help manage diabetes by enhancing insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, it possesses anti-inflammatory properties and could be beneficial in treating inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn′s disease. Laminaribiose potentially supports gut microbiota composition, immune function, and overall metabolic health.
