General description
Zinc chloride is a Lewis acid that can be used to promote cycloaddition, substitution, and addition reactions, including electrophilic aromatic additions and selective reductions. It is also used in the preparation of organozinc reagents via transmetalation.
Application
Zinc chloride can be used as a catalyst in the:
- Chemoselective dimethyl acetalization of aldehydes and ketones with trimethyl orthoformate to synthesize dimethyl acetals.
- Synthesis of 9-substituted acridines via Bernthsen reaction.
