Gene Information
human ... ALB(213)
General description
Albumin (ALB) is an autosomal gene with 15 exons mapped to human chromosome 4q13.3. The gene codes for a circulating human albumin protein containing 585 amino acid residues and 17 disulfide bridges. It is biosynthesized in the hepatocyte.
Immunogen
purified human albumin
Application
Anti-Albumin antibody produced in goat has been used in sandwich enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), quantitative precipitin assay and immunofluorescence.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Albumin is a transport protein that binds a broad range of ligands such as fatty acids, bilirubin, hemin, drugs, amino acids and ions among several others. Albumin may also function as a zinc carrier protein and consequently regulate physiological processes.
Physical form
Supplied as a liquid containing 15mM sodium azide as preservative.
Preparation Note
treated to remove lipoproteins

Approximately 10% of the albumin in normal human serum is modified by nonenzymatic glycosylation, primarily at the epsilon-amino group of lysine residue 525. Incubation of albumin with glucose under physiological conditions in vitro resulted in glycosylation of the same residue.
