General description

Calcitonin-related peptide α (CALCA) is a 37-amino-acid vasoactive neuropeptide. It is scattered in the central and peripheral nervous systems. The calcitonin/calcitonin gene-related peptide gene complex codes for a small family of peptides: calcitonin, katacalcin and CALCA. This vasodilator is potent than other vasodilators, such as adenosine, substance P or acetylcholine. CALCA gene is located on human chromosome 11p15.2-p15.1. Procalcitonin (PCT) is a calcitonin (CT) precursor.

Application

Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide Fragment 8-37 human has been used in the administration of drugs. It has been used to test the hypothesis that calcitonin gene‐related peptide (CGRP) plays a role in the fetal cardiovascular and metabolic defense responses to acute hypoxaemia by affecting sympathetic outflow.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Selective competitive antagonist at CGRP receptors, but not at calcitonin receptors.
Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CALCA) serves as a proangiogenic growth factor in the development of human placenta. Mutations of CALCA gene is associated with Parkinson′s disease, ovarian cancer and essential hypertension. CALCA induce vascular endothelial cell proliferation, migration and capillary-like tube formation.
