Application

A procedure has been described for harvesting native light-harvesting complex IIb (LHCIIb).
Chlorophyll a has been used as a standard for the calibration of fluorometer.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Chlorophyll a is an essential pigment in oxygenic photosynthesis. In photosystems, it is present as an antenna pigment as well as in reaction center I and II. Chlorophyll a is a blue-green pigment which absorbs light in 400-450nm and 640-660nm range. In photosynthesis, the energy absorbed by chlorophyll transforms carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen. When chlorophyll absorbs light energy, an electron in chlorophyll is excited from a lower energy state to a higher energy state. In this higher energy state, the electron is more readily transferred to another molecule. This starts a chain of electron-transfer steps, which ends with an electron transferred to carbon dioxide.

  1. Which document(s) contains shelf-life or expiration date information for a given product?

If available for a given product, the recommended re-test date or the expiration date can be found on the Certificate of Analysis.

  2. How do I get lot-specific information or a Certificate of Analysis?

The lot specific COA document can be found by entering the lot number above under the "Documents" section.

  3. How do I find price and availability?

There are several ways to find pricing and availability for our products. Once you log onto our website, you will find the price and availability displayed on the product detail page. You can contact any of our Customer Sales and Service offices to receive a quote.  USA customers:  1-800-325-3010 or view local office numbers.

  4. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.

  5. Is Product C6144, Chlorophyll a, soluble in solvents other than diethyl ether?

This product is soluble in ethanol (10 micrograms/mL). It is also freely soluble in acetone, benzene, and chloroform, but is not soluble in water. However, its spectral characteristics are most well characterized for solutions in diethyl ether.

  6. Can Product C6144, Chlorophyll a, be used as an analytical standard?

We do not recommend using this product as a standard. The fill weights of 1 mg and 5 mg are minimum values and are not guaranteed to a specific precision. Also, the product is not traceable to a consensus standard reference material.

  7. What is the purity of Product C6144, Chlorophyll a, as determined by chromatographic analysis (e.g., by HPLC)?

We do not determine the purity of Product No. C6144 by chromatographic means. We offer an HPLC tested Chlorophyll a (isolated from spinach) as Product no. C5753.

  8. How does chlorophyll a from blue green algae differ from that found in plants?

A complete analysis of chlorophyll a between species would require extensive study. We can say that the CAS number of this product is the same as that for chlorophyll a from spinach, a typical green plant.

Sea cucumbers are bottom dwelling invertebrates, which are mostly found on subtropical and tropical sea grass beds, sandy reef flats, or reef slopes. Although constantly exposed to fouling communities in these habitats, many species are surprisingly free of invertebrate epibionts
