Application

DMSO is a polar aprotic solvent used in chemical reactions, in polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and as a cryoprotectant vitrification agent for the preservation of cells, tissues and organs. DMSO is used in cell freezing media to protect cells from ice crystal induced mechanical injury. It is used for frozen storage of primary, sub-cultured, and recombinant heteroploid and hybridoma cell lines; embryonic stem cells (ESC), and hematopoietic stem cells. DMSO is frequently used in the combinations with BSA or fetal bovine serum (FBS).

Packaging

5 mL and 10 mL in flame sealed ampules, 100 mL in amber bottle

Other Notes

This product is a Hybri-Max product. It is hybridoma tested and is assessed for suitability in cell freezing. This product is sterile filtered (0.2 micron) and tested for endotoxin levels.

Caution

Supercools easily and remelts slowly at room temperature. Solidified product can be re-liquified by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.

  1. What is the molarity of DMSO?

DMSO will have a molarity of 14.1M, based on a density of 1.1 g/mL and a molecular weight of 78.13 g/mol.

  2. What is the DMSO dissolved in?

DMSO is not dissolved in any solvent. It is a pure chemical compound that is a liquid at room temperature.

  3. Where does DMSO come from?

DMSO is known to have been isolated from tree bark in the past. It is now a commericially synthesized solvent.

  4. What concentration of DMSO do I use in a cell freezing media?

DMSO is usually used at 1-10%, depending on the cell line.  For the cell freezing media that we offer, it is used at 8.7% concentration.

  5. Does DMSO have any synthetic utility?

DMSO has been used to oxidize thiols and disulfides to sulfonic acids, hydrolysis of epoxides, thioalkylation of phenols, and oxidation of primary alcohols and halides, and esters of primary alcohols to aldehydes.

  6. Which document(s) contains shelf-life or expiration date information for a given product?

If available for a given product, the recommended re-test date or the expiration date can be found on the Certificate of Analysis.

  7. What is the specification for 'pass' for cell freezing on the Certificate of Analysis for Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)?

Product D2438 is assessed for cell freezing.  Cells are frozen and stored at -70°C.  The cells are thawed, cultured and viability is assessed at 24 hours.  There is no evidence of cytotoxicity or abnormal cell growth.

  8. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) should be a liquid.  Why did it arrive as a solid?

DMSO supercools easily, and re-melts slowly at room temperature. The melting point is 16-19 °C. The solidified product can be re-liquefied by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.

  9. What is the basis for the endotoxin specification for Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)?

The industry standard for 'endotoxin free' is less than 1 EU/mL.

  10. What type of filter is used to sterile-filter Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)?

DMSO can be sterile-filtered through a 0.2 micron PTFE filter. The sterility testing is per the current US Pharmacopoeia method.

  11. How do I get lot-specific information or a Certificate of Analysis?

The lot specific COA document can be found by entering the lot number above under the "Documents" section.

  12. How do I find price and availability?

There are several ways to find pricing and availability for our products. Once you log onto our website, you will find the price and availability displayed on the product detail page. You can contact any of our Customer Sales and Service offices to receive a quote.  USA customers:  1-800-325-3010 or view local office numbers.

  13. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.
