General description
Cholesterol is a lipid molecule, found integrated to the cell membrane.
Application
Lipids Cholesterol Rich from adult bovine serum has been used as one of the lipid component to generate erythroblasts ex vivo. It has also been used as a standard to determine muscle cholesterol level, spectrophotometrically.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Cholesterol significantly affects the property of phospholipid membrane such as fluidity and membrane protein function. It exhibits a condensing effect towards phospholipids. Cholesterol-phospholipid interaction influences physiological properties of a lipid bilayer. Cholesterol serves as a precursor of bile acids, steroid hormones and vitamin D. Uncontrolled level of plasma cholesterol might lead to the risk of cardiovascular disorder.
