General description
Xylose is an important five‑carbon sugar (pentose) found in hemicellulose, various plant‑derived materials, and is also produced in certain metabolic and fermentation processes. Elevated or altered levels of xylose can be indicative of changes in carbohydrate digestion, absorption, or biomass conversion efficiency. Serum xylose values are used to assess nutrient absorption, with normal results indicating healthy intestinal function and low values suggesting malabsorption disorders like celiac disease or Crohn′s disease. Monitoring xylose is therefore valuable in applications ranging from clinical and nutritional studies to biofuel research and industrial fermentation.
Application
Suitable for detecting and quantifying xylose in a variety of biological and process samples, such as serum or plasma (after appropriate sample preparation), cell or tissue extracts, cell culture media, and fermentation broths or hydrolysates.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Xylose concentration is determined by a specific chemical reaction with phloroglucinol under acidic conditions, generating a stable chromophore whose intensity is proportional to the xylose present in the sample. The assay may be performed in 96-well plates (provided), which are heated either in an oven or on a 96-well plate heating block at 100ºC for 15 minutes. Absorption of the pink colored product in the reaction is measured at 554 nm. The detection range of the assay is 0.2-15 µg of xylose per test.
