General description
Orientin (ORI) is a luteolin derivative and water soluble 8-C-glucoside dietary flavone. It has one ketone, two ether, and phenyl groups in its chemical structure. Orientin is sourced from many medicinal plants such as Ocimum sanctum (holy basil), Phyllostachys species (bamboo leaves), Passiflora species, Trollius species, etc.
Application
Orientin has been used:
- as an anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative agent to test its protective effects against 1,2-dimethyl hydrazine (DMH)-induced colorectal cancer in rats model
- as a flavanoid to investigate its protective effects against mitochondrial dysfunction on antimycin-A induced murine C2C12 skeletal muscle cells
- as a potential endonuclease inhibitor of influenza polymerase PA subunit
Biochem/physiol Actions
Flavonoid glycoside found in the acai tree and globe and passion flowers. Antiviral, antimicrobial and antioxidant. Exhibits radioprotective activities.
Orientin displays neuroprotective effects against hydrogen peroxide-induced SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. It exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammation, antiaging, antidepressant-like, vasodilation, vasorelaxant, and cardioprotective effects.

Orientin, a C-glycosyl dietary flavone profusely found in rooibos tea and passion fruit have gained much attention owing to their multiple pharmacological potentials. The present study intends to investigate the anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory efficacy of Orientin in 1,2-dimethyl hydrazine (DMH)

Meningeal Fibrosarcoma (MF) accounts only for 0.5% of the brain tumors. Since the clinical manifestations and radiologic findings are non-specific, the diagnosis can only be achieved by pathological examination of surgically removed specimens. MF are tumors that behave locally very

The current study investigated the physiological effects of flavonoids found in daily consumed rooibos tea, aspalathin, isoorientin, and orientin on improving processes involved in mitochondrial function in C2C12 myotubes. To achieve this, C2C12 myotubes were exposed to a mitochondrial channel
