General description
Superoxide Dismutase is a metalloenzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Multiple isoforms exist in mammalian systems, including cytosolic Cu/Zn-SOD (SOD1), mitochondrial Mn-SOD (SOD2), and extracellular SOD (SOD3), each differing in metal cofactor and subcellular localization. SOD plays a fundamental role in cellular defense against oxidative stress and is essential for maintaining redox balance.
Application
Superoxide dismutase has been used in:
- Antioxidant activity assays
- Oxidative stress and ROS studies
- Cell protection and apoptosis studies
- Drug screening and toxicity studies
Biochem/physiol Actions
SOD catalyzes the conversion of superoxide anions (O₂⁻) into hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and molecular oxygen, thereby protecting cells from oxidative damage. It plays an essential role in maintaining redox homeostasis and preventing cellular injury.
Physical form
20mM PB (pH 7.0), 0.1M NaCl
Centrifuge the vial at 4ºC before opening to recover the entire contents. It is recommended that sterile water be added to the vial to prepare a stock solution.
