Gene Information

human ... CREB1(1385)

General description

CREB1 (cAMP response element-binding protein) gene codes for a 43kDa cellular transcription factor, CREB. It has 341 amino acids. It belongs to the basic leucine zipper family of transcription factors. It is upregulated abundantly in human tissues and is located on chromosome 2q33–35.
This protein binds the cAMP response element (CRE), a sequence present in many viral and cellular promoters. CREB stimulates transcription on binding to the CRE. Transcription activation is enhanced by the TORC coactivators which act independently of Ser-133 phosphorylation. Implicated in synchronization of circadian rhythmicity.

Immunogen

Peptide sequence around aa. 131-135 (R-P-S-Y-R), according to the protein CREB1.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Knockdown of CREB (cAMP response element-binding protein) blocks the development and promotes apoptosis in pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells by preventing prosurvival signals. It controls the transcription of antiapoptotic proteins in several cell types. Decrease in CREB phosphorylation leads to malfunction of mitochondria and hypoxia-induced apoptosis in chondrocytes.
