Gene Information

human ... EMCN(51705)

General description

The EMCN (endomucin) gene is mapped to human chromosome 4q24. It encodes a 80−120kDa transmembrane sialomucin. Mucin-14 is predominantly expressed in heart, kidney and lungs. Endomucin is a surface glycoprotein localized to the endothelial cells. Mucin-14 is a type 1 integral protein. Endomucin possesses 261 amino acid residues and a serine/threonine-rich extracellular domain. Anti-Mucin-14 Antibody detects endogenous levels of total Mucin-14 protein.

Immunogen

The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human Mucin-14.

Immunogen Range: 201-250

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mucin-14 controls lymphocyte adhesion and its expression is associated with the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. Mucin-14 associated with O-glycans enables it to promote cell−matrix and cell-cell interactions.

Endomucin is a membrane-bound glycoprotein expressed luminally by endothelial cells that line postcapillary venules, a primary site of leukocyte recruitment during inflammation. Here we show that endomucin abrogation on quiescent endothelial cells enables neutrophils to adhere firmly, via LFA-1-mediated binding

Endomucin, an endothelial-specific sialomucin, is thought to facilitate "lymphocyte homing" to synovial tissues, resulting in the major histopathologies of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We examined the association between RA susceptibility and the gene coding endomucin, EMCN. Association studies were conducted with
