General description

Avibactam sodium is a β-lactamase inhibitor and β-Lactamases are responsible for resistance to penicillins, monobactams, carbapenems, and extended-spectrum cephalosporins. It is a synthetic molecule with activity against gram-negative bacteria.

Application

Avibactam and related compounds have been studied for their ability to inhibit a variety of beta-lactamases, which are enzymes that inactivate beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillin. The development of new beta-lactamase inhibitors like Avibactam is important for combating antibiotic resistance.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Avibactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor which inhibits the activity of β-lactamases by binding to the active site of β-lactamases and blocks the access of the substrate to the enzyme. Avibactam is effective against bacteria resistant to ceftazidime like Escherichia coli.
