General description

Tebipenem pivoxil is a antibiotic which belongs to the class of compounds known as carbapenem antibiotics. Tebipenem is active against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae, among others.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Tebipenem inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, which is necessary for the growth and survival of bacterial cells. Specifically, it interferes with the formation of the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterial cell wall by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the bacterial cell surface. This leads to the weakening and eventual lysis of the bacterial cell.
