Koumine is a major indole alkaloid isolated from poisonous plant Gelsemium elegans that exhibits anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in inflammatory and neuropathic pain models. It appears that koumine ameliorate chronic constriction injury induced neurotic pain through induction of autophagy and the inhibition apoptosis in the spinal cord of rodents. Koumine protects IPEC-J2 cells from hydrogen peroxide induced oxidative stress and apoptosis through decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.

Koumine is a component of the Chinese medicinal herb Gelsemium elegans and is toxic to vertebrates. We used the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila as a model to evaluate the toxic effects of this indole alkaloid in eukaryotic microorganisms. Koumine inhibited T.

Koumine, an indole alkaloid, is a major bioactive component of Gelsemium elegans. Previous studies have demonstrated that koumine has noticeable anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in inflammatory and neuropathic pain (NP) models, but the mechanisms involved are not well understood. This
