Biochem/physiol Actions

Photoswitching membrane intercalating agent that allows light control, rapid and reversible manipulation of the cell membrane areas.

Azo-SO3H is a photoswitching membrane intercalating agent that allows light control, rapid and reversible manipulation of the cell membrane areas leading to dramatic shape modulation of living cells such as red blood cells, myoblasts, and cancer cells. It switches from thermodynamically stable E-isomer to the metastable Z-isomer by UV light (λ ≈ 365 nm) irradiation, and back to E isomer by visible light (λ ≈ 465 nm) exposure.
