Biochem/physiol Actions

Orally bioavailable, potent, and selective partial agonist of serotonin 5-HT1A receptor; non-sedative anxiolytic and antidepressant drug.
Gepirone hydrochloride is an orally bioavailable, non-sedative anxiolytic and antidepressant drug of the buspirone family with a unique mechanism of action that differs from other antidepressants and anxiolytic drugs. Gepirone acts as a partial serotonin 5-HT1A receptor agonist with differential action at pre-and postsynaptic 5-HT1A receptors. Gepirone is much more efficacious than selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) without causing sexual dysfunction.
