General description
Ceftiofur sodium salt a third-generation β-lactam antibiotic, exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against many veterinary pathogens. Its core mechanism disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis by irreversibly inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the inner bacterial membrane, causing cell lysis. It shows potent activity with low MIC values against key pathogens like Pasteurella multocida (MIC90 ≤ 0.03 µg/ml) and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (MIC90 ≤ 0.125 µg/ml). Parenterally administered due to poor oral absorption, ceftiofur rapidly metabolizes in vivo to desfuroylceftiofur (DFC), an equally active metabolite enhancing its efficacy. With a good therapeutic safety profile, ceftiofur is a significant veterinary antimicrobial for susceptible infections.
