Biochem/physiol Actions
Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit 1 α (EIF2S1) catalyzes the first regulated step of protein synthesis initiation and promotes the binding of the initiator tRNA to 40S ribosomal subunits. Binding occurs as a ternary complex of methionyl-tRNA, EIF2, and GTP. The Ser51 in the mature human EIF2-α protein acts as the sole site of phosphorylation that leads to repression of protein synthesis. EIF2-α also plays an essential role in erythropoiesis.
General description
Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit 1 α (EIF2S1) is a 35kDa protein. It is the α subunit of the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2α). The gene encoding it is localized on human chromosome 14q23.3.
