Gene Information
human ... PPM1A(5494)
General description
Protein phosphatase 2C-α (PP2C-α), also called protein phosphatase, Mg2+/Mn2+ dependent 1A (PPM1A), is a member of the family of Ser/Thr protein phosphatases and is composed of a catalytic subunit and a constant regulatory subunit. PP2C-α is highly expressed in heart and skeletal muscle. The gene encoding this protein is localized on human chromosome 4q12.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Protein phosphatase 2C-α (PP2C-α) or PPM1A is known to be negative regulators of cell stress response pathways. It has been reported to negatively regulate TGF-β signaling pathway and cell cycle. PP2C-α has been shown to dephosphorylate cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and it may be involved in cell cycle control. It modulates cell migration and invasion. Overexpression of PP2C-α is reported to cause cell-growth arrest or cell death.
