General description

Pipecolic acid (piperidine-2-carboxylic acid) is a non-proteinogenic cyclic amino acid formed during lysine catabolism and further processed in peroxisomes. Elevated levels are a useful biomarker for peroxisomal biogenesis disorders and can also appear in pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy and certain liver-related conditions. Testing pipecolic acid in serum or urine—typically by LC–MS/MS—supports differential diagnosis and monitoring.
